A consistent and effective daily oral hygiene routine is the very first line of defense against gum disease and cavities. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice and flossing once each day.

This will remove food residue and plaque before they have a chance to harden into tartar. While your execution during brushing and flossing are certainly important, the quality of the oral hygiene products you use is also critical. Some oral hygiene products only have cosmetic value. Unfortunately, their ineffectiveness is sometimes disguised in exorbitant marketing messages.

To help consumers identify the best products for their families, the ADA instituted their Seal of Acceptance program. Since its inception in 1931, it has become the industry standard for indicating a truly safe and effective oral hygiene product.

If a manufacturer wants to earn the Seal of Acceptance they will need to submit it to the ADA’s laboratories in advance of its launch. The active ingredients will then be tested and researched for safety and effective oral use.

If a product meets the rigorous guidelines it will earn the right to print the Seal of Acceptance on the packaging. This means you can feel confident in its ability to help maintain the good oral health of you and your family.

To further help consumers with their research, the ADA also provides an index of all oral hygiene products that have earned the seal on their website.
