Dentures are a big step for your smile. You may have lived with missing teeth for some time in your life, or you may have reached a point where one or more of your teeth have to be removed because of damage or decay. Whatever the case, dentures are definitely a major change, so you will need to be prepared.

It is not uncommon to feel some pain or pressure when you first get your dentures. However, if those conditions persist, you should speak with your dentist about adjusting or lining your dentures. You may have to spend some time learning how to speak and how to eat with your new dentures.

One of the advantages of dentures is that they are easy to clean. You can clean them with dish soap or hand soap, or use a special toothpaste designed to clean dentures, and there are special toothbrushes designed for cleaning dentures. However, a regular toothbrush with soft bristles will also work. Use warm water to clean your dentures, but not hot water; and clean them over a sink with water or over a towel to minimize the chance of the dentures breaking if they are accidentally dropped. You will still need to brush your mouth and gums. Even without your natural teeth, your mouth will still continue to harbor bacteria and create plaque. When you are not wearing your dentures, you should keep them in soaking solution, since they need to be moist to retain their shape.
